Newly Recognized Breeds

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWestminster Kennel Club organizers announced that the Wirehaired Vizsla (above) and the Coton De Tulear (below) will compete for the first time in the WKC show next year. The Wirehaired Vizsla is a Hungarian hunting dog and the Coton De Tulear is known as the “royal dog of Madagascar.” While the two dogs are very different, Gina DiNardo, a spokeswoman for the American Kennel Club, the governing body for Westminster, said of the new additions, “both are sweet, loyal, loving family companions.”
According to the AP, breeds are added to the prestigious Westminster dog show after they are recognized by the AKC. Recognition requires having several hundred dogs of the breed nationwide, among other criteria. With the newcomers, there are now 180 AKC-recognized breeds.
